Info Curation and Aggregation Services, Tools & Apps

As citizens and learners we can develop valuable critical thinking and literacy skills as we consume media curated by other individuals as well as curate and share our own. As educators and parents we need to become effective information curators and sharers, modeling these behaviors as we connect them with critical thinking for our children and students. Here are a few of the information curation and aggregation services I've heard about and/or use now. News.me

Brookstone Mini-Projector for iPhone4

Today at the airport in Minneapolis I had a chance to play with Brookstone's new mini-projector for the iPhone4. I was pretty impressed! I've previously looked at the Pico projector, which was the 1st generation of these devices. It wasn't very bright. The sales person told me Brookstone started carrying the "Cinemin" mini-projector after the Pico.

I recorded & edited a short video on my iPhone of the Brookstone mini-projector.

A more expensive version for iPad is also available:

I'm not springing for one of these yet, but the possibilities here are exciting. In 5 years? Cheaper & more powerful. My kids will probably use something like this in college when they work on team projects, or watch movies with friends. Amazing!

A Creative ePub Audio Story Powered by Five Card Flickr Story @cogdog

As a part of my breakout session in Minnesota today, "Tell a Story with 5 Photos," participants and I used Alan Levine's amazing "Five Card Flickr Story" site to create an enhanced ePub ebook. Instead of writing our creative story which used our selected images, we recorded our voices. I also added the direct links to each photo on Flickr separately on each page after the breakout session was over. We created AND published this entire project (including this blog post) on an iPad. I consider this our collaborative work of creativity to commemorate "Open Education Week" this week! Here is the direct link to download our enhanced ePub eBook, as well as links to all the digital resources we used for this project. (You will want to open this on an iPad, since it is currently the only eReader which can "play" enhanced ebooks.) Who says iPads aren't wonderful for creating media?! The title of our 20 minute, creative masterpiece is "Dreams of Opera."

Technology Today Enhanced ePub eBook

Today in Yukon Public Schools, our Common Core Coaching (CCC) teachers created an eBook about ways we have been using technology in our lives. This is an enhanced eBook, including photos of artwork the teachers drew and audio recordings about each picture. We created this nine part eBook in 25 minutes at the end of our PD workshop.

Here's a link to "Technology Today.epub" in my Dropbox:

We used "eBook Creator" on an iPad2 to create this eBook, and shared this via Dropbox and a free Posterous blog. See this post and video tutorial for more details about is process.
